Wandering The Square a few weeks back I spotted a little sign in an abandoned-looking window announcing an upcoming studio opening in the space. I immediately put it on my calendar. A couple of days later a friend sent me a note about an upcoming gallery opening. Yup, same place, so I knew I definitely needed to check it out.Turns out Rio Claro is a working studio space owned by two recent transplants from the Massachusetts coast. They checked out Austin first, found it too crazy and quickly started looking further out. When they drove through San Marcos, they knew SMTX was the place for them.
The warm and gregarious owners, Gigi and Stevie, have billed it as a concept space where they produce works on canvas, paper, silk and other surfaces. It’s part working studio, part gallery and part boutique featuring their work and that of select artist and artisans they’ve brought along from their northern gallery.
We went to the opening and got a chance to chat with both of them as well as several other local artists and art supporters. Somewhere in the conversation, my work came up and Gigi told me to get in touch with her that week. Turns out she was looking for some smaller items like jewelry to add to the shop. Long story short, Rio Claro is now offering some of the latest adaptive reuse pieces. If you find yourself in San Marcos (and you SHOULD, really soon!), stop by Rio Claro Studio to see some great art and meet the wonderful folks behind the latest addition to the growing SMTX art scene.
